Poor performance and accuracy
By smos
The 40-6512 kit was received as a gift. Was trying to use the unit to set concrete footers for new home construction. Out of the package the laser was off 10 inches in 50 feet. Attempted to calibrate the laser per the instructions in the user manual. Was able to get the laser to project within 1/4 inch at 50 feet. However the bubble vials could not be calibrated to coincide with the laser beam being level. The thread pitch on the adjuster screws is to coarse for very fine adjustment. Less than 1/10 of a turn moved the beam 1/2 inch at 50 feet. Every time I rotated the laser mount 180 degrees to check the accuracy the bubble vials would be off. Fortunately I still had my 40+ year old David White contractors level, less than 1/16 of an inch accuracy in 50 feet! And my old David White level has bounced around in the bed of my pickup truck over the years. The Johnson 40-6512 sat on the seat of my truck in a padded case.
Called Johnson Level customer service for assistance. Their response was that the unit needed calibration. Calibration is NOT covered under warranty. So to get the unit calibrated will cost me additional expense, even thought the unit was not calibrated well from the beginning. A very expensive paper weight.
Other concerns on the quality of the kit are the tripod. Too light and flimsy. Any activity around the unit such as walking past it causes it to vibrate. Takes too long for it to settle down if you try and use the detector. You will most certainly need to purchase a more rigid tripod to get satisfactory performance from this laser. Using a water line level would be a much less painful experience. User guide contains no information on how to use the accessory wall-ceiling mount. User guide contains no information on calibrating the Z-axis. So there are no guidelines on how to check for the 90 degree split-beam vertical accuracy.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate this product a 3. It is disappointing that a brand I had trusted to provide rugged quality for years, offers such a poor performing tool. Requiring me to incur additional cost to calibrate a unit that should have worked out of the box is unacceptable. I will no longer purchase any Johnson Level product in the future.
