Worked -- for a while

I bought one of these on closeout at Costco in 2005 to level LEGO train layouts on uneven terrain. It did the job well, but I only had two occasions to use it over the last 5 years. On the third occasion (this month in 2010), it no longer worked reliably (the laser intensity varied from visible to invisible, as though the spinning electrical contacts had oxidized). So, I got about an hour of use from the device before it failed.

Looks very good but....

It is well finished, and it is a multiple task sophisticaded instrument for only @ $50, but the crank and pinion elevator-- a stanadard mechanical devise-- did not work, and the laser outdoors was not visible at more than 10 ft. The one I received was manufactured 6 years before my purchase which very unusual for a new piece. CSN Stores, from whom I bought it, very correctly and pomptly refunded me for the full amount I had paid.

Doesn't work out of doors...

I purchased the Alton rotary laser to use in building. I intended to use it to set the foudation piles. However, the laser is not strong enough to see the light at any distance over 5 feet! It's useless unless it's dark or you're indoors.
The unit is also very difficult to level. If you get the 'bubble' in the center of the bulb and then spin the level 180 degrees, it's no longer level!
I hope to be able to return this thing and get my money back.
